Brought in my grandfather's Longines for a full movement service. The timing report they gave me on collection was a proper two-page document — before and after figures in five positions. I wasn't expecting that level of detail. The watch is running within about three seconds a day now, which is better than it managed when it was new, according to the service records I dug up. Turnaround was four weeks as they said it would be.

I'd had my Seiko case "polished" at two other places and both times the lugs came back visibly rounded. Brought it to Vervelle for the refinishing and they explained before taking it in that they do the brushed and polished areas by hand, not with a buffing machine. They weren't exaggerating — the case came back looking exactly like it should, edges sharp, brushing directional. Two weeks as stated.

The movement service on my husband's Omega was done well and the documentation was impressive — I didn't know timing reports were even a thing until I saw one. Four stars rather than five only because the turnaround went to the longer end of the three-to-four-week window. They did message to let us know, which was fine. Watch has been running consistently since collection in late May.

The vintage programme for my 1963 Glycine Airman was something I'd been putting off for years because I couldn't find anyone I trusted with a watch that significant. Kah Wei knew the movement, which is unusual, and the conservation note they produced is the most thorough document I've ever received about a watch. The parts provenance list shows where every replaced component came from. This is how it should be done.

Good experience overall. I brought in a Tissot with a bracelet that had become quite loose at the clasp and a couple of bent pins. The work was done neatly and the condition sheet they gave me was useful — it noted a small spot of case wear near the crown that I'd never noticed. Solid communication throughout. Would bring other pieces here.

I've used Vervelle twice now. First time for a movement service on a Citizen I'd bought from my father. Second time for refinishing on a stainless-steel Oris that had developed quite a few surface marks over fifteen years. Both jobs came back with written documentation and the pricing was exactly as quoted. I appreciate that they contact you if something unexpected comes up during the work rather than just doing it and billing you later.

Jobs in more detail

Case Study 01 — Movement Service

Rolex 2135 calibre, Datejust Lady, approximately 12 years since last service

Challenge

The movement was losing around two minutes per day and the owner had noticed the rotor occasionally felt slightly sticky. The watch had not been serviced since purchase. The previous timing records, if any, were unavailable.

Work Done

Full strip-down of the 2135 calibre, ultrasonic cleaning of all components, inspection of the rotor bearing — which showed wear — replacement of the bearing, fresh lubrication, and rate adjustment across five positions. New gasket set fitted.

Outcome

Timing report on collection showed dial-up rate of +4 seconds per day and a maximum variation across all five positions of 9 seconds. Rotor operating freely. Bench time 3.5 weeks. Owner: "I didn't realise the rotor issue was as significant as it was until I saw the before photographs."

Case Study 02 — Vintage Restoration

Omega Seamaster 300, reference 2913, 1964

Challenge

A family piece that had stopped running. Inspection found a broken mainspring and a cracked fourth wheel pivot. The original sword hands had been replaced at some point with incorrect aftermarket hands. The owner wanted the movement working and as original as reasonably achievable.

Work Done

Movement rebuilt with new mainspring; fourth wheel pivot fabricated on the lathe from appropriate material. Correct sword hands sourced from a parts collection in Europe and fitted. Dial handled without cleaning — the original patina was intact and the owner agreed it should stay that way. Case sympathetically attended to by hand.

Outcome

Running within 8 seconds per day after adjustment. Conservation note included the recommendation that the caseback seal be checked every three to four years given the original case design. Parts provenance list notes the sourcing country for the hands and mainspring. Bench time 11 weeks. Owner: "The documentation alone was worth it — I now have a complete record of what's in this watch."

Case Study 03 — Case Refinishing

Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1A-010, steel, 6 years of daily wear

Challenge

Six years of daily wear had produced a number of hairline scratches on the alternating brushed and polished surfaces of the case. The owner was particularly concerned about maintaining the sharpness of the case edges, which is a known weak point of machine polishing on this reference.

Work Done

Hairlines removed from brushed flanks using directional hand finishing to match original grain. Polished bevels brought back to a consistent mirror finish without removing the geometry of the edge. Bracelet pin and collar set replaced and end-link fit corrected. Clasp mechanism re-tapped.

Outcome

Condition sheet with before-and-after photographs confirmed all surfaces attended to. Case edge geometry preserved. Bench time 2 weeks. Owner: "I'd been putting this off for two years because I was worried about what a polish would do to the edges. It looks exactly like it should — case geometry intact, surfaces right."
